The PGA Fellowship

Introduction to the Fellowship

The General Assembly of the UN

So, the UN has six main organs – and one of them is the General Assembly (GA). It’s basically the UN’s main diplomatic hub, where all 193 member states have an equal voice. Each year, the GA elects a President, usually following an informal practice of rotating the presidency among five regional groups: African States, Asian States, Eastern European States, Latin American States, and Western European or other States.

This year, the presidency went to Cameroon, and H.E. Philemon Yang, the former Prime Minister of Cameroon, was elected as the President of the 79th General Assembly. For six months, I got the opportunity to work at his office – the Office of the President of the General Assembly (OPGA) – at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. I was nominated by Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), and subsequently selected by the UN based on rotation, my academic qualifications, experience, and professional background – getting the chance to represent Nepal as one of five fellows chosen globally.
